Sicily

STROMBOLI
Rather feisty for his age.
Over 230,000 years old and still not getting any quieter. The Stromboli volcano, a UNESCO World Heritage site, also known as the "lighthouse of the Mediterranean". It’s the only volcano in Europe that is regularly active, but nevertheless, the 12 km² island of Stromboli north of Sicily is inhabited by over 500 intrepid residents. Eruptions occur all the time, with rocks heated to over 800°C shooting into the sky, and the lava makes its way to the sea or hisses back into the crater. When the view is clear, you can see a majestic cloud of smoke over the island from afar. Of course, the responsible observatory monitors every second of the sleeping giant's life with modern measuring systems and can warn tourists and residents soon enough in the case of an emergency.

Stromboli & Etna

ETNA
The highest active volcano in Europe.
It is also one of the highest mountains in Italy, at around 3,200 meters. For comparison, the Grossglockner comes to 3,798 meters and the Zugspitze to 2,962 meters. Just like its "little brother" Stromboli, Etna is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Four main craters and around 400 secondary craters diligently produce vast amounts of lava, which repeatedly forms new craters as it makes its way to the surface of the earth. Despite its fiery depths, Etna is also the southernmost ski resort in Europe. Whether you're a skier or a volcano watcher, take the Funivia dell'Etna cable car
up to approximately 2,500 meters above sea level. From there you can climb to the Belvedere vantage point (approx. 2,700 meters) and see where the numerous eruptions have shaped Etna's typical moon-like landscape. At the same time, the rest of the Province of Catania offers an inspiring level of diversity, from the Mediterranean coast and endless lemon tree orchards, down to the historic port city, which is also called Catania. Italian flair mixed with seething natural spectacles. Be amazed and enjoy!
